Meet our
Chief Executive Officer

Alex Waetjen

Alexandra “Alex” Waetjen brings more than a decade of experience in museum leadership, education, and operations, having served in key roles at several nationally recognized institutions. Most recently, she supported operations at the Mississippi Children’s Museum in Jackson, Mississippi, which was recognized as one of the top three children’s museums in the country. Prior to that, she spent several years at the Tulsa Children’s Museum Discovery Lab, where she was promoted to Deputy Director during a period of major organizational growth and successfully led marketing, events, and guest experience initiatives.

Her career also includes positions with the Gathering Place in Tulsa, the State Historical Society of Missouri, the Institute of Texan Cultures, and the San Antonio Museum of Art — giving her a wide-ranging background in educational program development, volunteer coordination, and community engagement.

Waetjen holds a master’s degree in museum studies from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies and art history from Southwestern University.

“Alex’s experience with some of the nation’s most successful children’s museums makes her uniquely qualified to lead our organization,” said Linley Richert, President of the Board of Directors. “Her passion for creative learning and her strong operational leadership will help the Children’s Museum of Southwest Louisiana continue to grow as a cornerstone of family engagement and education in our region.”

Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Children’s Museum of Southwest Louisiana’s mission is to provide an educational and fun environment that encourages curiosity, creativity and social skills through hands on programs and exhibits.

Our goal is to educate children through play and discovery while aiding in a child’s development and understanding of the world around them and to encourage a lifelong passion for the arts and sciences. This includes exhibits, workshops, and other activities for the children's benefit.

We believe play is powerful and universal. Play can unite people across different cultures, backgrounds and beliefs.

We value diversity, equity and inclusion. We appreciate and respect all people and embrace the similarities and differences that arise through race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, language, religion, mental and physical ability, nation of origin and citizenship status. We want our exhibit areas and programs to be inclusive for all. We provide opportunities that help people facing disparities achieve their full potential. We want a child to believe the sky is the limit and that he or she is capable of anything.

The Children’s Museum of Southwest Louisiana aligns its beliefs with the Association of Children’s Museums. The ACM is an international professional organization representing children’s museums and institutions dedicated to serving children. Its mission is to champion children’s museums as we pursue our vision of a world that honors all children and respects the diverse ways in which they learn and develop. The Association and its members are committed to honoring, practicing and promoting diversity, and believe that children’s museums have unique opportunities to do so by:

Engaging children and families in exploring and appreciating their own cultures and the diverse cultures and lifestyles of others. Enhancing children’s cultural competence, necessary for their active and successful participation in an increasingly diverse and global society.

Playing an active role in building inclusive communities through exhibits, programs, advocacy and partnerships that reflect and celebrate our diverse communities.

Enhancing staff and organizational capacity to attract, welcome and serve a diverse audience and membership.

Modeling their commitment by ensuring our boards and staff at every level reflect and benefit from our diverse communities.
